Cervical radiculopathy is a condition characterized by the compression or irritation of a nerve root in the cervical spine (neck region). It occurs when one or more spinal nerves in the neck become inflamed or damaged, leading to pain, numbness, weakness, or a combination of these symptoms along the pathway of the affected nerve.
The most common cause of cervical radiculopathy is a herniated disc, which refers to the displacement of the gel-like material (nucleus pulposus) within the intervertebral discs that cushion the vertebrae. When a disc herniation occurs in the cervical spine, it can exert pressure on nearby nerve roots, resulting in symptoms.
Other conditions that can contribute to cervical radiculopathy include degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), osteoarthritis, bone spurs, and injury or trauma to the neck. Risk factors for developing cervical radiculopathy include aging, occupations involving repetitive neck motions, smoking, and poor posture.
The symptoms of cervical radiculopathy typically manifest in the neck and radiate along the path of the affected nerve into the shoulder, arm, and hand. Common symptoms include neck pain, sharp or shooting pain down the arm, tingling or numbness in the arm or hand, muscle weakness, and decreased reflexes. The severity of symptoms can vary depending on the extent of nerve compression or irritation.
